ahem. I was wondering if you would spread the word about our Alabama Burn. It started last year because we were too poor to go to BM. This year we're still too poor so we're doing it again! Here's our humble pr so far, hope you can help build our community:

Greetings Flamers! We're doing it again! We had at least 6 people at last year's event, and we're looking to break some records at Burning Ham Arts Festival 2.

Come out to support and promote the local Burning Man community, if you're not going to the desert. Last year we danced, sang, heard local performers, burned a small effigy, and participated amongst interesting folk!

Bring your art, music, dance, food, water, tent, pets, and kids if you must, and camp out at the Pioneer Campground at Oak Mountain State Park, Birmingham, Alabama, August 29- Sept 1. Or just show up on Labor Day for the Big Burn.
How much? Three bucks, cheap.
ABOUT PETITE JAMILLA:
Bellydance Superstars youngest member Petite Jamilla, as pictured on the cover of “Live at the Follies Bergere” DVD has been touring with the Bellydance Superstars since January of 2004. Performing the celestial and inspiring double veil as a featured part of the show, is just a fraction of what this talented dancer has to offer. Since she was 17, Petite Jamilla has been teaching workshops that range from Zill Techniques with Modern Incorporations, Choreographed Fusion Drum Solo’s, and Spinning Introductions with Double Veil “How To’s.” By the age of 20, she had produced 2 instructional DVD’s [Beginner’s Dance Movements, and Secrets of the Double Veil] available for purchase through www.bohemianmarket.com. Cross-Cultural Fusions are a passionate focus for this dancer as her Irish/Native American ethnicity became the incentive to further explore and push the boundaries of fusion in dance. With training in Bellydance (taught by her mother, Jamilla Rasa), Polynesian, Scottish Highland, Modern Irish, and Cape Breton Step Dancing her unique blend began an unclassifiable style. Dually equipped as a classically trained musician in Western style compositions and Scottish/Irish blends - it was, of all things, the Highland Bagpipes that showcased Petite Jamilla’s talent for the critically acclaimed Rod Stewart in February of 2000.

My name is Ryan Morrison and I am the lead drummer for the Middle Eastern tribal percussion ensemble NAWAR, the musical accompaniment for the enchanting Tribal Fusion Bellydance Ensemble Gypsy Red Tribe! I have posted a few events here and felt that I might just post a little note to introduce ourselves!

We are based here in Birmingham, founded back around 2000, though our core group has been performing locally in numerous manifestations since 1997. We are an eight-piece group, performing Tribal Fusion Bellydance accompanied by Middle Eastern Tribal percussion. We have performed at such venues as the Improv Fest 2004 and the Imagination Festival, and will be performing this year as the first bellydance group to ever perform at CITY STAGES!

An addition to performing, our director and co-director Sherry and Diana offer tribal bellydance classes at the Energy Pointe Institute across from Alabama Art Supply on Southside. The classes are Friday nights beginning at 6 PM and are $10 a class.

For more information about classes and up-coming performances, please visit http://gypsyredtribe.net and our tribe.net site at http://gypsyredtribe.tribe.net!
Thanks to Beth for inviting us to join this tribe! We hope to see you all at City Stages this year!!! -- Ryan

Creating foundations of intentional communities is becoming more prevalent and vital to address feelings of isolation when choosing an alternative lifestyle. One way we plan to facilitate this is through regular gatherings of individuals that understand the benefits of manifesting beings into our life's that reflect the true affinity of all human kind.

Basically we are in the beginning/brain storming/experimental stages of facilitating community through regular veg/vegan/raw potlucks with solution/action based dialogue bustin out in to an open jam! Also doing chill out/do whatever, guided yoga/qi gong movement, massage party, movie watching, etc. Through February we plan to do these activities on Wednesday evenings starting at 6:00pm and Sunday afternoons starting at 1pm until further notice. Below is a more extensive explanation of the outlook on the flow of the potluck/dialogue gatherings...

One regular event will eventually beginning with some form of movement; streching, Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, etc. For now we will begin with a vegetarian/vegan/raw potluck with supportive dialogue, sharing experiences and information, ideally in a non-biased form, acknowledging the broad spectrum of views. Also non- judgmentally being aware of and praising the entire process/source of what we consume is relevant to how it affects the individual and the whole.
After dinner we will move into solution/action based dialogue. Topics will evolve by group consensus, most likely including the confluence of spirituality, technology, health, politics, the arts. Creating fun activities to share, learn, and act on. Possible projects will evolve and be decided through this form of interaction.
After closing the circle, we'll end the evening with festive celebration and play including live music, the more instruments you bring the better!
Directions will be given upon contact. We are eager for any and all suggestions/comments/questions/participation.

this is in response to Jasper's comments on the "topics" thread. I've been thinking alot about economy lately too and the whole energy behind acquiring objects and material goods. I got involved with Nervousness.org over the past year and I've sent some pretty wonderful things to folks without being reciprocated in kind. It is better to give than receive is a severly understated cliche. While I was busy, working crafting and doing art for people that were not likely to give back, I received some of the best insights that i don't have the eloquence to go into here, gnosis, head change, heart change, ideas that changed my life, that would not have ever occured to me without the giving.
i've spent this past year making things by hand and really putting my heart, blessings and good energy into the object's i have made and it set me to wondering about what kind of energy is put into things that you run out to Wal-mart and buy. What kind of oppression might be behind say a nice persian rug, or genuine silk 'whatever',slave trade, people working for our 'ravenous american consumption' in other countries...then there's the whole "proudly made in the USA" bullshit... excuse my language but to me that's exactly what it is, slaves that make a few more bucks an hour, people spending all their highest energy times of the day working 'for the man' coming home too tired to do things that give them joy and the only good energy they have left is spent in the living room where the focal point of that room is a time killin' dream stealing, media and entertainment vaccuum that sucks more of their spirit and attention into acquiring still more objects with little or no spirit, more money and acquiring them all with such a quickness that it just wouldn't do to spend joyful, reflective, cathartic time making something theirselves or filling their souls up connecting with loved ones. Whew! was that one sentence? anyway i'm off the soapbox now.

jas, i've been seeing 'give it away' and you get something back manifest for me too. my daughter is about to have a baby and while i was waiting for her to find out what sex it is i was holding a huge bag of boy clothes and a huge bag of girl clothes for her. the very day that i found out it was a girl and gave away the boy stuff, my husband came home with a big bag of clothes for my kids from someone he worked with. this is how i get all my kids clothes, when im done with them i pass them on and more comes back, almost magickally in the same week!

oh yeah about gift economy- i ran across this article a few months ago that you'd find very interesting....it is very long.....gonna post the 'guts' of it here then a link if you want to read more (it's about marcel mauss a french anthropologist who wrote a ?book? called the Gift in 1923, it started a 'movement'called M.A.U.S.S. can't remember what that stands for, it started in the 80's, picked up and started flourishing more in the 90's) ....and a couple more links if you're interested......one is a free e-book called for-giving that i have not had the time to read all the way through but the intro sounds good, as well as some other topics in the table of contents that i have skipped around read just because the title sounded interesting.

loving you guys!

http://slash.autonomedia.org/analysis/02/10/11/1246214.shtml

Mauss' conclusions were startling. First of all, almost everything that "economic science" had to say on the subject of economic history turned out to be entirely untrue. The universal assumption of free market enthusiasts, then as now, was that what essentially drives human beings is a desire to maximize their pleasures, comforts and material possessions (their "utility"), and that all significant human interactions can thus be analyzed in market terms. In the beginning, goes the official version, there was barter. People were forced to get what they wanted by directly trading one thing for another. Since this was inconvenient, they eventually invented money as a universal medium of exchange. The invention of further technologies of exchange (credit, banking, stock exchanges) was simply a logical extension.

The problem was, as Mauss was quick to note, there is no reason to believe a society based on barter has ever existed. Instead, what anthropologists were discovering were societies where economic life was based on utterly different principles, and most objects moved back and forth as gifts — and almost everything we would call "economic" behavior was based on a pretense of pure generosity and a refusal to calculate exactly who had given what to whom. Such "gift economies" could on occasion become highly competitive, but when they did it was in exactly the opposite way from our own: Instead of vying to see who could accumulate the most, the winners were the ones who managed to give the most away. In some notorious cases, such as the Kwakiutl of British Columbia, this could lead to dramatic contests of liberality, where ambitious chiefs would try to outdo one another by distributing thousands of silver bracelets, Hudson Bay blankets or Singer sewing machines, and even by destroying wealth — sinking famous heirlooms in the ocean, or setting huge piles of wealth on fire and daring their rivals to do the same.

All of this may seem very exotic. But as Mauss also asked: How alien is it, really? Is there not something odd about the very idea of gift-giving, even in our own society? Why is it that, when one receives a gift from a friend (a drink, a dinner invitation, a compliment), one feels somehow obliged to reciprocate in kind? Why is it that a recipient of generosity often somehow feels reduced if he or she cannot? Are these not examples of universal human feelings, which are somehow discounted in our own society — but in others were the very basis of the economic system? And is it not the existence of these very different impulses and moral standards, even in a capitalist system such as our own, that is the real basis for the appeal of alternative visions and socialist policies? Mauss certainly felt so.

In a lot of ways Mauss' analysis bore a marked resemblance to Marxist theories about alienation and reification being developed by figures like György Lukács around the same time. In gift economies, Mauss argued, exchanges do not have the impersonal qualities of the capitalist marketplace: In fact, even when objects of great value change hands, what really matters is the relations between the people; exchange is about creating friendships, or working out rivalries, or obligations, and only incidentally about moving around valuable goods. As a result everything becomes personally charged, even property: In gift economies, the most famous objects of wealth — heirloom necklaces, weapons, feather cloaks — always seem to develop personalities of their own.

In a market economy it's exactly the other way around. Transactions are seen simply as ways of getting one's hands on useful things; the personal qualities of buyer and seller should ideally be completely irrelevant. As a consequence everything, even people, start being treated as if they were things too.

The owner of the coffee shop, Tony Moss, moved the meetings to his house after Living Planet closed it doors for the last time. In his living room, the community continues to grow. We still gather weekly in an effort to raise a conscious community where we can go to encourage each other's strengths, and support each other's needs. We have a regular group of about fifteen people, and an extended family of about thirty or forty, and we are growing by the week. We've come together in recognition of a need for a stronger community, as a strong community is better able to support and sustain itself relying less on an outside source for its needs. One of our goals is to inspire other groups like our own to come together to take a look at what's going on around us, and to take a role in a stronger community."

Which is exactly what has inspired me to manifest community wherever I go. Wednesday night gatherings at Tony's was like my sancutary, my weekly rejuvenation to face the world's atrocities and embrace all the reflective brilliance that is the duality. So I'm blessed to help facilitate a space that will create the foundations of community. From what I've seen Birmingham, as everywhere, is flourshing with new paradigm minds that are seeking out others of this affinity. We are experiencing the climactic exsistance of the human race as we know it, creating unity through community is vital. As I become you and you become me, let us decide were we shall go....
Yoga for You with Kathy Jones

Yoga is about you, and your relationship to the outside world. It is more than a stretching or a relaxation technique. It is about relationship; relationship on all levels. The practice of yoga helps us live more in line with our higher values, deepening our understanding of ourselves, and our appreciation
for life as a whole. Yoga helps to improve health in many ways.
Bringing focus to your breath and specifically developed poses increases strength and flexibility, which in turn, reduces stress hormones, increases mental clarity, and frees up energy in your life.

Kathy undertook yoga teacher training in Houston, in a comprehensive program under the direction of teacher Robert Boustany, She has furthered her studies with well known teachers worldwide, and studied the Viniyoga tradition with Gary & Mirka Kraftsow, Brian Dorfman, and at the KYM in Madras, India.
She is available for private lessons, classes and workshops on Yoga Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath practices), Chanting, Meditation, Ayurveda, Women's health, Children's yoga and Yoga philosophy.

Yoga Sadhana is the discipline and application of the eight-step process of yoga to your life. Sadhana is your personal practice, the practice you do at home. This is important in achieving physical, energetic, metabolic, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Honor yourself and your higher aspirations. Make an appointment today for a private lesson. A private lesson is an important way to take charge of your life, and refine your understanding of your unique needs; body, mind, and spirit. The focus is you. Together we will work out a practice and a plan that is
tailor-made for you, your condition, and your goals. The idea is not dependence but independence so that you can master your own practice at home. Private instruction can be periodic, or regular, as necessary.

Private sessions work wonderfully in conjunction with group classes because the one-on-one work will teach you about the habit patterns of your specific body. You can carry this knowledge into your everyday life, as well as into group yoga classes with enhanced understanding of how good posture &
alignment feels, bringing relief from tension.

Yoga is about You. It is about working with your capacities today, and expanding them so you are able to meet your goals. Yoga and Ayurveda are about expanding and enhancing your experience of life.

Private sessions are held at various locations in the Birmingham and Atlanta areas. Speak with Kathy to arrange. Kathy Jones 205-877-8444

® Yoga Basics This class focuses on good body mechanics, so you
understand how to practice yoga safely. It also teaches how the different postures can be used to fill your unique needs; healing specific bodily tensions, digestive concerns, scoliosis, etc. useful for those who are new to yoga, and those who
have previous practice
® Hatha yoga Ha means sun. Tha, moon, We work on balancing the warm and cooling energies in the body, using elements of muscular work and relaxation in each pose. Suitable for all levels.
flexibility.
® Ashtanga prep. Soft, safe, flowing yoga with emphasis on the breath and linking breath with movement. We will focus on correct understanding of ashtanga postures, and the benefits proper alignment has on your body. We may adapt poses slightly to address personal concerns.
prepare you for further ashtanga practice.
® Gentle yoga is for those with fears about trying yoga, as well as for those with limitations that impair movement… arthritis, sufferers, people with back pain and those limited by wear and tear caused by stress.
